Last weekend, Les Amis’ very own Facilities Manager, Alex Black, went the extra mile in fact, he went 50 of them!
What began as a run in the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon turned into something extraordinary. After crossing the finish line at the Weighbridge, Alex didn’t stop to rest or celebrate. Instead, he kept going, setting off on a 50-mile ultramarathon route that passed every Les Amis residential home, finishing in style with a final lap at the FB Fields running track.
This incredible feat was part of the charity’s celebrations for Les Amis’ 50th anniversary, marking half a century of supporting and empowering people with learning disabilities in Jersey.
But Alex wasn’t alone on his journey. Along the way, he was joined by Les Amis staff, service users, friends, and supporters who walked, ran, and wheeled alongside him, creating a moving display of togetherness and determination. The atmosphere was electric, full of cheers, laughter, and shared pride as the community came together for a cause close to their hearts.
Thanks to the generosity of everyone who sponsored, shared, and took part, the Miles 4 Smiles challenge has already raised over £13,000 so far and the donations are still rolling in! Every pound raised goes directly towards furnishing the new nursing facility, Maison des Amis, which will provide care and support for Islanders with learning disabilities and higher nursing needs, such as end-of-life care.
“It was tough, but seeing so many people come out to support Les Amis kept me going,” said Alex. “This challenge wasn’t just about running it was about showing how strong we are together as a community.”
A huge thank you to Alex, all the participants, volunteers, and supporters who made this milestone moment one to remember. Together, we’ve proven that when it comes to making a difference, every step counts.
Donations are still open help us keep the momentum going and make an even bigger impact!
