Les Amis is Martin and Alex

Martin came to Les Amis in 2003, where he was supported to develop his independent living skills. He was able to move from residential care with in-house support to his own shared accommodation.

Martin is very much looking forward to the next step in his journey - to move into a flat of his own with access to a shared garden, where a new adventure awaits him and his two rabbits, Thumper and Bambi.

Juggling two jobs, Martin embodies the adage that disability does not mean inability: Up-cycling at Acorn and recycling commercial cooking oil with Les Amis' sustainable social enterprise, which has saved over 1 million litres of oil from polluting Jersey's skies and turning them, instead, to biofuel.

Facilities Manager, Alex oversees the Oil Recycling Service at Les Amis, which employs some of its service users, including Martin since 2019. He is volunteer coach of the residents and service users football team, who together play for the lovingly-dubbed, 'Les Amis FC', and compete in exhibition matches during the Kick on for Les Amis five-a-side football fundraisers.

Alex has seen Martin's physical coordination develop through his participation in Les Amis FC's fun training sessions, where he began as a striker, like his favourite player Harry Kane. This year, Martin became the team goalie and enjoyed to defending the team against Alex's shootouts.

When Alex, joined Les Amis in 2022, he didn't expect to run into Martin - who quickly reminded him of their time at Cubs together! The two quickly found lots in common, including their love of football and carpool karaoke. But, despite being the same age, Martin cranks up the recycling van's radio much too loud for Alex's taste!

Together, Martin and Alex embody the can-do spirit and camaraderie of the Les Amis family.
