October marks World Down's Syndrome Awareness Month.
Les Amis supported ITV to connect with one of our residents, Darren, and his family to hear their story and gain insight into attitudes toward Down's Syndrome when Darren was born 46 years ago.
Despite being diagnosed with Down's Syndrome at 6 weeks old, Darren has led a very adventurous and fulfilling life. At 17 Darren joined a theatre group in the UK, performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Shakespeare Globe. He has since performed in Shooting Fish (1998) alongside Kate Beckinsale, and starred in James Bond parody Jack Blond (2008). You may also recognise Darren's voice from Les Amis adverts.
Darren currently lives independently with three friends and works at Beresford Street Kitchen.
ITV also heard from Sarah, mum of 10-year-old Maggie. Maggie is the first pupil with Down's Syndrome to attend St Martin's Primary School. She loves reading, sports, and chooses to be happy each day.
Both Maggie and Darren show determination to engage in community and activities like any other person. Focusing on stories like theirs shows the importance of accessibility and inclusivity. Thank you to ITV for providing visual representation and raising awareness on the lives of people with learning disabilities.
