The States of Jersey have a target to recycle 36% of the Island’s waste under the banner Recycle for Jersey. Les Amis supports the island’s green agenda and we have achieved this by creating the Les Amis Recycling Service. Through this service, Les Amis has also created more employment opportunities for our service users.
The recycling team recycles paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, aluminium cans and waste vegetable oil from local businesses.
The plastic bottles, cardboard and paper are taken to Abbey Plant for recycling and the aluminium cans are taken to Jersey Zoo where they are a contributory factor in their ‘Cans for Corridors’ scheme, while the oil is filtered by the Les Amis team and sent to the UK to be converted into biofuel.
In 2018, we acquired ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) accreditation bringing us in line with over 3,500 businesses worldwide all aiming to implement the highest sustainability requirements
To date, the team has recycled over 380 tons of recyclable material and has filtered over 200 tons (200,000 litres) of waste cooking oil from various restaurants and businesses around the island.
Les Amis’ Recycling Service currently consists of nine employees and is a social enterprise initiative that provides work for people with a learning disability, including employment contracts and the associated benefits of being an employee of a large organisation.
More and more people are seeing the necessity to recycle their waste and protect the beautiful island we live on. The service helps to improve our local environment and enables more of our service users to gain employment, therefore improving their mental wellbeing and quality of life.
