Celebrating World Down Syndrome Awareness Day

Mar 11, 2025

On Friday 21st March 2025, we are celebrating World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD).

WDSD falls on the 21st day of the third month, every year, which was chosen to represent the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome. This day is all about advocating for the inclusion, rights and well-being of people with Down Syndrome - a community which still faces significant barriers.

The theme for this years WDSD is 'Improve our Support Systems', which calls on governments around the world to ensure that people with disabilities and their families are supported and included in all aspects of life. You can find out more about this year's theme here: 2025 Theme - World Down Syndrome Day.

Everyone's needs are different, and we all have a right to be supported in a way that allows for choice, control and dignity.

Why wear odd socks on WDSD?

Wearing odd socks serves as a powerful symbol of embracing and celebrating differences. This simple and fun gesture not only challenges societal norms that favor conformity but also raises awareness and sparks meaningful conversations about diversity and inclusion.

When people see odd socks and ask about them, it provides an opportunity to discuss the significance of World Down Syndrome Day, helping to break down barriers and foster empathy. Ultimately, this act promotes the idea that everyone, regardless of their differences, has unique talents and contributions to offer, encouraging a more inclusive society where people with Down syndrome are valued and supported in living full, meaningful lives.
