Down's Syndrome Awareness Week is celebrated across the globe throughout March 20 - 26 each year to raise awareness about people with Down's
Syndrome.
Islanders are being encouraged to don their oddest, most colourful sock combinations for World Down's Syndrome Day on Tuesday 21 March 2023 and help Les Amis promote the #LotsOfSocks campaign.
Why odd socks? It all began with John Lee Cronin, a man with Down’s Syndrome and his love of crazy socks and making people smile. John and his father co-founded www.johnscrazysocks.com, which continues to spread happiness and the word about Down’s Syndrome via the medium of odd socks!
Yenni Kusumo, Les Amis’ Head of Charitable Income & Partnerships, said: “World Down's Syndrome Day has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012, on the 21st day of the third month – signifying the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome that causes Down's Syndrome.
This World Down’s Syndrome Day, Les Amis would like to especially celebrate the 21 people* with Down’s Syndrome whom we currently support across our three service care lines: residential, domiciliary and respite.
I hope that Islanders will take embrace ‘odd socks day’ as a fun way to brighten their day, workplace or school and support Les Amis in our efforts to empower people with learning disabilities”.
On Tuesday 21 March, the Les Amis team will be on Broad Street, St Helier, displaying their amazing sets of socks, raising money and talking about the work that the charity does. They would love to see many odd sock combinations out and about in town and on social media.
