Les Amis resident takes to the sky

Aug 21, 2017

Les Amis resident Val Gavey and employee Lauren Cornish are jumping out of a plane over Jersey to launch the Les Amis Legend campaign and raise funds for the charity.

The tandem skydives are taking place on Thursday morning. Take off is planned for 11:30 am and Lauren and Val will be landing on the beach at the Gunsite Café at noon.

The Les Amis Legend campaign is a fundraising initiative which builds on the willingness of many Islanders to be always up for a challenge. In order to achieve Les Amis Legend status, a supporter of the charity must raise £1000 in one year for the charity.

Val first sky dived for charity four years ago after the death of her mother. She raised all the funds herself and then donated the money to Jersey Hospice, who supported the family during her mother’s final days.

Since then, Val has jumped another three times, once for the JSPCA, secondly for Riding for the Disabled and then for Jersey Rescue Dogs. Next year, Val is planning on jumping for local charity Acorn Enterprises, where she currently works.

She said: “I love showing that anything everyone else can do, we can do at Les Amis.”

Karina Le Boustouller, Val’s Support Worker, said: “Val is a real adventurer. She loves going camping and is incredibly excited for her next skydive. Her confidence and drive to make the world a better place inspires me on a daily basis.”

Val will be joined by Les Amis staff member Lauren Cornish. Lauren has sky dived once before while travelling in Australia and is keen to take to the skies again alongside such a courageous resident.

Lauren Cornish, Les Amis’ General and HR Administrator, said: “I really wanted to help Les Amis promote the Les Amis Legend campaign by becoming a Les Amis legend myself. Pledging to raise £1,000 for the charity in one year is such an excellent way to boost our fundraising efforts to provide an even better service for our residents. If ten people sign up to be a Legend, then that is an extra £10,000 for the charity! I am a little bit nervous, but doing it with Val has given me the courage I need.”
