Empowering People...
About Us

Les Amis Project (at Five Oaks) - this consists of the permanent areas of accommodation within the main building at Five Oaks and three group homes in the west of the island, two of which opened in 2007. The permanent accommodation at the main building includes part of the ground floor area, a bedsit, an apartment known as Meadowview and the separate Courtyard Flat. One unit of accommodation, the Bedsit, is currently unoccupied and used to provide Basic Skills programmes.
In total the Project is home to 16 residents.
A separate unit based in the main building at Five Oaks is specially adapted flat offering stimulating and safe weekend breaks to people with profound physical disabilities and learning difficulties.

Town Project - now established and a fully-grown project with a range of accommodation within St Helier and its immediate environs. The Project has 5 houses and one flat and accommodates 22 residents. As part of the re-structuring process in 2007, three new houses were added to this Project.

St Saviour Project - is the longest established Project and currently includes 4 houses and is home to 14 residents. One house from the Project was sold in 2007, as it no longer met the needs of its residents or the organisation. An exciting new development of two houses in Trinity, due in 2009, will be based in this Project.

Central Project - now well-established, this project contains a range of accommodation on the outskirts of St Helier and into St Clement. Currently there are 4 houses and five flats in total providing homes for 25 residents. Four of the flats provide homes to married couples or long-term partnerships and these are some of the most independent facilities within Les Amis.

Respite Project – following the restructuring of 2007, all respite facilities have been brought together in one distinct Project.
The various facilities involved are:

The Lodge, a five-bed apartment based at the main building providing general respite. This is the only respite service for adults with learning disabilities in Jersey.

LES AMIS was first opened in 1975. Originally known as Maison Variety, it has many houses and flats in the Island of Jersey, offering support to groups of people living independently. Staffing levels vary depending on the needs of the groups and individual residents. In 2007 a major restructuring of the various projects was undertaken to reflect the rapid growth of Les Amis during 2007.
The organisation now consists of the following Projects:

The Garden Flat, a very specialist service providing respite for those with profound physical disabilities in addition to learning disabilities. This service is run on behalf of Health and Social Services, is open two nights a week and based on the ground floor of the main building.

Maison Allo - set up by and run on behalf of Jersey Mencap, this service provides respite for up to 5 children at any given time and is located in a large house in a pleasant, location close to St Helier.
The respite services provide accommodation to 24 children and 21 adults in total. New referrals come from Special Needs Service.

Committee and Management Team - all services provided by Les Amis are managed on a daily basis by the Management Team and overseen by the Management Committee.

Staff Support and Training - great emphasis is placed on support and training of staff at Les Amis. Specialist 'in-house' expertise is available in the fields of Sexual Health and Relationships, Manual Handling, Diet and Nutrition, Epilepsy, Mental Health and Challenging Behaviour.
Over 30 topics are offered on an annual basis and a more appropriate qualification than NVQS has been identified; an ASET distance learning course specific to learning disability was piloted successfully to a group of 10 staff in 2007, with two further groups of 10 enrolling in 2008.

Community Opportunities Guaranteed Service (COGS) - a day service that has grown substantially since its creation. COGS provides daytime opportunities in small groups or on an individual basis for those for whom work or other day services are not an option. COGS aims to be community based, accessing facilities within ordinary settings on a daily basis, encouraging the development of life-skills and creating meaningful opportunities that lead to greater independence.
COGS Gardens is a separate team of residents who work with a trained member of staff on maintaining the various gardens and communal areas of the many properties in the Les Amis portfolio. Some outside gardening is also undertaken and they have recently developed a field at Le Geyt Centre growing fruit and veg for the group homes.

Basic Skills - this project offers tuition to any resident who wishes or needs to develop greater skills in the areas of numeracy, literacy, money work and a host of other skills essential to modern day living. Tuition is offered by staff, all of whom have received specialist training in this field and is delivered at home or in our resource centre.
Funding was originally provided by the Lloyds TSB Foundation for the Channel Islands for the first four years. A recent donation for a further five years funding has been gratefully received from donors who wish to remain anonymous.
